Lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Customers drift into your small business breathless and probably a little dazed from the heat. And there is an overwhelming sense of time slowing down, if only for a few moments.
Customers may laugh at their slower pace or blame their relaxed nature on the sun. But as a small business owner, don’t let the “summer slows” affect your bottom line. In fact, now is the perfect time to put on your thinking caps and add some creative punch to your upcoming promotions.
For instance, recently at my local supermarket, the banana section incorporated fun into their display. A major banana distributor joined forces with a movie company to herald a new children’s film, and attached a sheet of stickers to each bunch to “dress up” your bananas as characters in the movie.
That’s just one example of zany creativity in action. Here are a few suggestions to help you think outside the marketing box:
- Creative Signage. If you advertise upcoming events in your store window or on a sandwich board out front, use bright colors and eye-catching phrases to capture passersby. An area dress shop dressed up their outside placard with the phrase: “Life’s too short – Buy That Dress!”
- Promote Local Events. Tie your next promotion into a themed activity in your town. For example, if the local playhouse is putting on a production of “Grease,” run a ’50s night in your store with timely music and displays and award customers who dress up with a special discount. Don’t forget to spread the word on your social media sites!
- Be Social. Speaking of social media, invite customers to share photos of their favorite summertime activities on your site (hopefully with one of your giveaways in the photo) or set up a contest online, such as asking customers who traveled the furthest this summer with a random winner or winners getting a special prize or discount.
- Comes the Fall. Looming around the corner, the next season. If you offer classes this fall (cooking, painting, projects of any kind), it’s never too early to let your customers know what will be available soon – some may look forward to time away from the kiddies. Or perhaps your company is participating in a local event, such as a Rockin’ for Austism festival.
Before you know it, today’s hot weather will morph into a cooler season – and your special promotions will already be in place to attract and keep customers coming back for more.
