Takeaways

Small businesses had a tough first quarter of 2025, only to be welcomed into Q2 with stressors around potential tariffs and heightened worries of a recession. Tariffs will likely mean higher prices for materials for small businesses, and they will have the tough decision to either absorb the costs or pass them along to customers. Small business optimism dimmed in reaction.

Experian says there is a silver lining for small businesses, including "positive economic indicators such as low unemployment at 4.1%, a decrease in core inflation to 3.1%, and a drop in rent inflation to 4.2%." Additionally, the firm said "small business credit score are resetting to more normal levels...delinquencies and utilization return to growth pre-pandemic levels.”

Methodology

Biz2Credit pulled over 100,000 complete financing applications submitted between January 2022 and March 2025. This report examines a number of variables including annual revenue, operating expenses, age of business, credit score, approval rate, and funding rate.
